The Swedish Shipbrokers' Association's Autumn meeting...

  • Date: 27/11/2012

Robert Hodge, the Account Executive at ITIC for Sweden attended the Swedish Shipbrokers’ Association’s (Sveriges Skeppsmäklareförening) autumn meeting on 8th November in Gothenburg.

The Association represents 140 member companies in Sweden, which include liner and tramp agents, shipbrokers and logistic companies.  The autumn meeting was very well attended with over 100 delegates.

Robert gave a loss prevention lecture to the attendees. This focused on negligence claims which can arise from both shipbroking and ship agency. In respect of ship agency he gave claims examples for reefers set at the wrong temperature, cargo sent to the wrong destination and errors arising from mistakes on bills of lading. For shipbroking the areas covered included errors made during negotiations, failure to pass on messages between the parties and delayed demurrage statements. Whilst providing claims examples, Robert gave advice on how to avoid these mistakes.

The meeting was held at the City Museum of Gothenburg (Göteborgs Stadsmuseum).  Other lectures were given throughout the day by Sara Sköld of Clean Shipping Index, Tona Paulsen the past president of FONASBA and Monika Ostrom from the Swedish Minsitry of Maritime Enviroment.  The meeting concluded with an open discussion on what could happen when the new 2015 Sulphur Directive comes into force.  The panel for this discussion included Lars Rexius of UniFeeder, Michael Kjellberg and Ragnar Johansson of SL, January Fjellman of Transatlantic and Christer Schoug CEO of Swedish Shipowners’ Association.

After the meeting the delegates went to the Association’s office for drinks, followed by a excellent dinner at the nearby restaurant ETT.

Robert thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of the delegates and was made to feel very welcome. ITIC would like to thank the Association and its members for their kind invite to speak at their meeting.
