The International Transport Intermediaries Club marked 100 years of providing services to the shipping community with a celebration in London.

A forerunner of the modern organisation was set up in 1925 to provide professional indemnity cover for shipbrokers and has expanded over the years to include ship managers and other transport roles.

An article announcing the new Chartered Shipbrokers’ Protection Association in December 1925 featured alongside other headlines warning of the US shipping problem and the “dumping” of Russian oil, ITIC CEO Tom Irving told hundreds of people at the event at Christ Church, Spitalfields.

“Even 100 years on, similar challenges are facing the industry today,” he said.

He announced a new internship programme at the event, developed with the London Nautical School, that will give students experience across maritime services such as broking, insurance and logistics.

ITIC insures more than 3,500 members in the shipping, aviation, offshore and transport sectors.
